Five to do's as an administrator

Five more things that have helped me become a better building leader

1. If a teacher or a student ask you to come to class to watch a lesson, lab or presentation GO, because they really want you to see it.

2. Take time to visit classrooms as often as you can

3. Greet students and teachers as they arrive and during class changes

4. Laugh, Smile and have Fun

5. Stay Positive and Always Listen

Time

Time is Valuable! Time is the most valuable thing we have, and you don't want to waste it on things you can't change. As an administrator I can find it hard to balance my time with my work and my family. I try so hard to be the best admin that I can be that sometimes my family gets the short end of the stick. I can have the mentally that if something is going on I need to be there to watch it or help with whatever it is and never consider really consider the time I am missing at home with my own girls. I say this because I am trying this summer to put aside things that can be done at a later date or things that I can't control to spend more time with my girls. The biggest thing is my cell phone, it keeps me connected to work 24/7 and I am having to learn to put it down and and leave it down so that I can spend my valuable time with my young girls and wife because time flies and you can't ever get it back. This is challenging because I try to be the best and want ...

Relationships

Building relationships as an administrator with your staff and students is important! A healthy positive relationship with your staff allows for them to feel it is ok to have fun at work and will allow them to feel as if you have their back! It takes time and effort on your part to build these relationships. They aren’t just going to happen. Positive relationships with your students allows for your students to have a voice and shows that you truly care! So if you are not building these types of relationships you need to start! Show your staff and students you care by opening that line of communication and start showing you value them!

Work Ethic

Your WORK ETHIC speaks volumes about who you really are! Don't be the person that sits back and waits for things to happen or the person that calls someone else to do the the task, when you see a job or task that needs to be done do it. Waiting on someone else or calling someone else to do it waste time and energy that could have been used in other places. As an administrator there should be no task that is beneath you. You should be on the front line helping in all areas not just the ones on your so called duty list.  Leading by example you earn/gain your employees trust and respect. When they see you doing they are more willing to do. Don't be afraid to show others up by working hard at what you do. If you start slacking to not hurt other feelings or constantly thinking I should do this but don't need to because my coworkers will talk about me not staying in my lane, it is ok to still do the work. Don't let others bring your work ethic...
